Pansy, boiled wool blanket

Pansies in jacquard relief on Tuscan boiled wool: three shades between lilac and purple, for a floral that never turns ordinary.

A boiled wool blanket with a raised jacquard pansy motif. Same construction and format as the Palms, 150 by 190 cm, boiled wool 80/20, jacquard woven, with a floral in place of the tropical pattern. The three colourways stay inside the purples and the warm tones, in keeping with the flower they are named after.

Boiled wool

Boiled wool is wool that has been fulled: the cloth is worked with hot water, soap and mechanical pressure until the fibres close on each other. What comes out is a dense panel that does not fray at the edge and needs no hem. It has a firmer hand than ordinary wool, holds its shape over time and wears better. The 20% polyester stabilises the cloth, stopping it shrinking in the wash and keeping the jacquard relief defined. It is the Tuscan blanket cloth, worked in the Prato district for centuries.

The pansy motif

The pansy is a classic of European textile design, used in furnishing cloth and porcelain since the nineteenth century. Here it is read in jacquard relief, woven into the cloth rather than printed on it, which gives the floral a depth you can feel as well as see. Against a geometric pattern, a woven floral gives a room a more decorative character.

Three colours, one palette

Lilac is the lightest and the most delicate, at home in a bright bedroom. Purple is deeper and more saturated, and works as an accent against neutral sofas and chairs. Tea is a warm amber that steps outside the purple range and pairs easily with pale wood and natural cloth. Keeping the palette to three colours is deliberate: this is not a generic throw, it is a blanket with a fixed idea of itself.

Where and how to use it

As a bedcover on a single bed, where 150 by 190 cm covers the mattress with a small drop at the sides. On a sofa, where the structure of boiled wool keeps it in place. On an armchair, where the floral is fully visible and becomes the focal point.
