A throw becomes part of everyday life: close to hand on the sofa, folded over a chair, put away as the seasons change. A little attention helps you care for it without unnecessary washing. Begin with the instructions on its label.
Read the label first
Fibre blends and constructions need different treatment. Do not transfer the washing routine for one throw to another, even if they look alike. Follow the individual label, including any instruction for specialist cleaning.
Air before you wash
For dust or a room smell, begin by airing the piece in shade. It is a gentler first step than washing the whole textile. If the label calls for specialist cleaning, follow it.
Deal with a spill, not with the whole throw
Blot rather than rub and avoid heat, which can set some marks. Do not apply a generic stain remover before checking the fibre and label. When in doubt, ask a specialist and describe both the material and the stain.
Drying and storage
If the label permits washing, reshape the piece and dry it as directed, away from strong direct light. Store it only when completely dry, folded rather than compressed, in a clean and breathable space.
Pilling and surface changes
Repeated friction can cause small pills to form on some fibres. Avoid pulling them from the yarn. If you are unsure how to treat a change in the surface, ask for advice before using a brush or fabric shaver.
